General Information:
The Civil department's responsibility is to file and maintain records on civil actions and to receipt and disburse money as ordered by the court.

There are four types of civil cases filed in this office: civil (chapter 60), limited civil (chapter 61), small claims (claims less than $4,000) and transcripts. The cases generally involve mortgage and tax foreclosures, recovery of money, breach of contract, name changes, evictions and recovery of damages for personal injury. There are approximately 27,000 cases filed each year in the Civil Department with over 20,000 of these filed in the limited area alone.

The civil clerks file new cases, enter information on computer, and issue pleadings. The clerks have a great deal of contact with the public. This contact includes both telephone calls as well as walk-ins.
