Judge Friedel was born in 1936 in Fort Scott, KS, and attended public schools in Hastings, Nebraska. He was married for almost 45 years when his wife died. He has three children and six grandchildren. With his remarriage he has four step-children, six step-grandchildren, and two step-great-grandchildren.

Currently, Judge Friedel is the Assignment Judge in the Civil department. Previously, he has served as a trial judge in the Criminal, Civil, and Juvenile Departments. As a trial judge he also received assignment of cases from the Probate and the Family Law Departments.
