The Traffic Department is located on the 5th floor of the Sedgwick County Courthouse and is staffed by 4 trial clerks.
Traffic cases can range from a speeding ticket to driving under the influence. Most traffic cases handled by the District Court arise from violations occurring upon county or state highways but outside the city limits. However, district courts handle all appeals from municipal courts.
The Traffic Department is responsible for filing traffic citations submitted by the Sedgwick County Sheriff and the Kansas Highway Patrol and receipting fines and costs for these violations. There is approximately 30,000 traffic citations filed in this office each year.
The traffic clerks enter information on computer and prepare cases for court. They handle case pleadings, judgments, warrants, suspensions and abstracting to the Department of Motor Vehicles.
